Getting my geek on: PageRank

Getting my geek on: PageRank

Wow am I learning a lot!

When you put a search term into your Google search bar it shoots out answers.  Those search results have often seemed like pure MAGIC to me, but it alas I am a grown up and know that MAGIC only exists in Disney movies, my imagination, parking karma and chocolate;)  But really those results are based on something.  Some things actually like:

  • Keywords in the URL
  • Keyword presence throughout the website
  • Number of incoming links
  • Quality of incoming links
  • Page Authority
  • mozRank
  • Page Rank
  • Anchor Text distribution
  • Content on the competing page

Now what the HECK does all of that stuff mean?

Sorry guys, you’ve got me!  I am no guru.  I am just a girl brave or crazy enough to quit her job with only a laptop and a dream.  Well wait one second!  AND a sharp inquisitive mind, who knows how to Google and read.  So here is my lesson for the day.

PageRank is, as stated by Wikipedia,  a link analysis algorithm, named after Larry Page, that is used by Google to rank websites.  It is a measure of relative importance of the sites in comparison to the word set in the search bar. PageRank is key in the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) of your website.

From what I gather about Page Authority is that is is measured by your PageRank, and measured by the links to your page.  The more links that your website/webpage has to other similar and highly linked sites/pages the more webpage “cred” it has.  The links are like backup for your site showing that it has depth, breadth, validity, aka “Page Cred”.

I provided a link to Wikipedia if you would like to learn more, and if you want to share some of your knowledge PLEASE do.  I LOVE it when knowledge comes to me;)

MITM Creation Call #12

Click to hear Daily Creation Call #12

Happy Monday!  On this show I share about this weekend, which was a HUGE weekend for me, because 1) It is the second to last weekend before I leave my job and 2) I spent it with Lisa Nichols and the cast of the Speak and Write to Make Millions Seminar.

In this episode of the MITM Daily Creation Call I share what I have been getting out of the Speak and Write Seminar, interviewing someone to replace me when I leave my job, living my life waiting for other people to give me for permission, making up my future, and broken promises.  I also asked that you, those of you who are listening to the live episodes and reading our blog, let us know what you like, what you don’t like, who you are, what you find useful and what you want going forward.

We really do what this to be of value to you, so please let us know what you find valuable.  LOVE YOU!

Daily Creation Call #11

Empower half hour with Jess and I.  During this show Jessica discusses her freaked-out, I-hate-the-world panic and the subsequent AHA! moment she had.  Her upcoming weekend trip and the value of listening to her husbands advice.  It turns out he really has been listening to what she has been saying.  Good work Tom;)

I discuss the value of sharing your dreams with the people in your life, the collaboration that is possible when you tell people what you are up to, the book The Power by Rhonda Byrne and the law of attraction.  I also do a little rap/singing.  Don’t worry about showering me with praise, I know I am a talented lyricist!

I am so pumped about this extraordinary life that we get to live.  Thank you for being on this journey of self discovery with us.  I will never shut-up about how much I love you, because I am not sure you will ever REALLY get how much it means that I get to be part of this blog and your life.

Stream of income #1 – Kasita Jewelry

Hello friends, family, fellow entrepreneurs, desk jockeys and earthlings!

It just occurred to me that I had this momentous occasion that I never really shared with you.  I make jewelry in my humble little abode.  And a couple of weeks ago after a year of making and breaking promises about selling my designs at my local coffee shop I womaned up and had “the talk” with them.  Guess what – they said that they would love to have me sell my jewels consignment at their shop.

Above you will see me cheezing soooooo hard about after mounting my shadow box of dreams on the wall of my local Twigg’s Coffee Shop.  Income stream #1 established.  This photo was a year in the making and I am so happy that I asked someone to capture it for me.  Carrying my jewelry into the shop was such a rush.  I know that in the grand scheme of things this may seem like a small deal, but I think it is so crucial to capture the little victories along the journey.  John Dumas, this is one of my I made it moments:)  What this moment means represents to me is having the courage to turn my dreams into a reality that I share with the world.

What’s really cool – I HAVE SOLD SOME STUFF!  I think that this week I will add a cash/revenue counter to my about me page so you can see how my financial progress is going.  Talk about a whole new level of accountability and transparency.  Would you guys like that?

If you would like to buy some of my jewelry, support me, like me or just see more of my designs, please check out the following links.

I’m not going to make it

I said that I was going to get a couple of things done this weekend, ie photo shoot, eat Paleo, order business cards and get my Google Sniper site up and running.  I did all of that except for the Google Sniper site, and I wanted to let you know now that I am not getting that done.  I would like to think that I am going to and its not going to work out.

I am a huge fan of calling a spade a spade.  I mean any marketing class that you attend will let you know that if you are not going to do something, you are breaking a promise to the public – go ugly early and let them know up front what the problems are or what the truth is.  Now I know that you are not my consumer base and I didn’t sell you faulty Asprin.  But I do think that you deserve that same respect/honor, or how else will we grow this beautiful fledgling relationship into the full-on partnership that I am planning for.

The cool thing about coming to grips with and admitting what is so, is that now I can:

  1. Look at what didn’t work  that had me not reach my goal
  2. Look at the impact of not doing what I said I would do (if this were a time sensitive activity it could really have an impact – lost contract opportunity missed equipment delivery date, etc)
  3. Make a new promise that can be trusted because I let you know ASAP that I was not going to be able to do what I said I would when I said I would (credibility)
  4. Put a plan in place that will support me in my new promise, building off of and avoiding what go in the way of me accomplishing the last promise

That said, my new promise is that I am going to pick a product to sell and what key word I am going to build my website around by Tuesday morning.  And to support me in doing that I have blocked 3 hours.

Now it’s time for nighty night.  Love you guys!  Let me know what you are re-promising to do that you previously promised to yourself or someone else in the comments below.

My Breaking Point

Does anyone remember the movie Joe Versus the Volcano?  It is a story about, and I quote from IMDB: “When a hypochondriac (Tom Hanks circa 1990) learns that he is dying, he accepts an offer to throw himself in a volcano at a tropical island, and along the way there, learns to truly live.”  Well I do, and it made a mark.  This one scene in particular where Joe goes to his office job with buzzing florescent lights, green grey walls, no windows, sick co-workers and this one crappy dying plant.  Anyone?  Bueller?… Bueller?

Ok well don’t let me discribe it to you – just watch it.

This is not what my job is like, but when I have nightmares about being an office desk jockey for the rest of my life, like the day that I called Jessica freaking out and we decided it was time for me to pick at date andwrite my letter of resignation, this is what they look like.   Me frail, sickly and covered in chair-ass (RLOL that word always makes me chuckle), sitting underneath humming lights, surrounded by piles of papers with a yelling boss and no sense of purpose.

Like Donald Trump said, “Part of being a winner is knowing when enough is enough. Sometimes you have to give up the fight and walk away, and move on to something that’s more productive.”

What is your breaking point?  What is that one thing that would push you over the edge now or that has pushed your to the “enough is enough” point in the past?  Let us know in the comments below.

Practical Reality Check with Katie

Do you ever have those days when you feel like you are regressing? When despite all that you KNOW you have overcome you just don’t think that you are making any progress? Well I invite you to STOP IT!

Stop thinking about it. Stop judging and assessing how you are doing. Stop looking to how your thoughts and feelings for answers. And check in with something much more accurate – reality.

The people in our lives have a much more objective opinion of our progress. They are with us through the ups and downs and they know what is going on in your life and what you have accomplished, but they don’t have that little voice that is inside of your head skewing their view of your progress. I invite you to stop trying to figure it out and check in with them.

Ask them if you have been covering ground and making progress? Ask them if they have seen a change in who you are being from day to day? Ask them specifics about something you are concerned about – do I seem like I have gained some facility around decision making?

I guarantee you will be surprised by how generous, loving and really accurate their responses are. Do this exercise and then share in the comments below what your friends and family said:)
